Pandeni Chitimela

Research Technician

Pandeni grew up with a passion to protect animals.  When he joined Malilangwe in 1997 as a scout, it was a dream come true, and he served in this role for six years.  His enthusiasm, sharp wit, and thirst to learn gained him recognition, and he was recruited to the Trust’s Research Department in 2003.

Through the Research Department Pandeni was trained in scientific methods of vegetation and animal monitoring, including aerial game counts. These skills have equipped him to undertake data collection on the Reserve and to meaningfully assist researchers and students during their fieldwork. Aside from data collection, Pandeni’s prime responsibility is to populate the Research Department’s custom built Animal Population Database. This is done by capturing and verifying wildlife sightings recorded daily by scouts in the field (he has two technicians to assist him with this). From the data he can generate monthly reports on any species, but most importantly on Malilangwe’s black and white rhino populations. To ensure that quality data is collected in the field, Pandeni continually trains scouts and presents feedback at workshops.

Pandeni is a true conservationist. His ambition is to ensure that Malilangwe’s wildlife is safe, and that its flora and fauna remain healthy for future generations to enjoy.
